John Visser’s interest in art and painting began at a young age when he took visual art classes from local artists in his hometown. After graduating from Sheridan College’s Illustration Program, John started his career as a freelance illustrator and later moved to work as a graphic designer for the printing industry. Several years ago, John decided to focus more seriously on painting, and has been developing his career ever
since. John currently paints full time for his studio.
John’s specialty and passion is landscape, which stems from his desire to paint the beauty and feeling that he sees in nature. His work attempts to evoke a “sense of serenity and beauty that nature instills.” He also attempts to express the feelings that rural and wild places induce, such as a “meditative calm, a removal of the distraction of everyday life.” His interest is often caught by the “unfolding drama of light and shadow in combination with the graphic, abstract qualities the landscape can posses,” and his inspiration comes from the “timeless, enduring, yet ever changing qualities of the land.” In his work, John attempts to show his sense of wonder at how “changing light can transform the seemingly mundane into extraordinary.”
